  • Proper Care and Maintenance of Pumptec Pumps

    ‘With proper care and maintenance, your pump should provide years of service....’ is a common statement in Owner’s Manuals, but the specific practices are seldom described.

    For Pumptec pumps, there are a few simple practices to follow to keep the pumps in proper working order.

    1) Pumptec pumps are intended to pump ambient temperature clear water and water-based solutions in the 7 pH range (Standard chemicals).  Solutions that do not fit this description may be able to be pumped, with additional care and consideration (Non-standard chemicals). Under no circumstances is it recommended to pump volatile chemicals like gasoline, acetone, etc... These high VOC chemicals are prohibited.

    2) After use with a non-standard chemical, the pump should be flushed with clear water and left with only clear water inside until the next use. Chemicals left inside the pump can corrode and damage internal parts and surfaces resulting in rapid wear.

    3) Hot liquids, greater than 120 F, can cause damage in the pump and erosion failure. Hot water is unstable and can flash to gas during the pumping process causing cavitation which will erode and pit the pump body parts. If hot water must be used, it needs to be pressurized either by placing the tank above the pump (up to 130F) or by the use of a booster pump (beyond 130F).

  • Line Loss in the Pump System

    One of the challenges encountered by many in charge of proper system design and performance is the physical phenomenon of system performance loss as a result of a volume of water passing through a hose. The resistance a hose creates is similar to the resistance ultimately created by the nozzle, but with a lesser effect.

    Below is a guide chart for reference within the flow range of Pumptec pumps.

    Understanding this information can prevent under-specifying of pump set and disappointing results.

    A situation many find themselves in is when a small plastic diaphragm pump with long hoses on hose reel is expected to provide critical flow and pressure out the nozzle at the end. A pump rated for 3 gpm and 60 psi, used with ⅜” hose cannot offer much performance at the end. According to the chart, the line loss is 50 psi per 100 ft of hose.

    The benefit of a Pumptec plunger pump is extended pressure capabilities to overcome the resistance in the hose. For example, a standard Pumptec pump set, 114T-075/M15 (Spray Basic), has a pressure rating of 150 psi to provide desired nozzle performance at the end of long hose runs.

    The chart can also be used to maximize system performance. If, for example, the system produces 3 gpm and has 150 capability, and 100 psi is needed at the nozzle the chart can assist. If the hose is 100 ft long, then ⅜” hose is a good choice, but if the hose length is longer then ½” hose would be better.

  • Advantages of a pump without oil

    Pumptec plunger pumps have a unique, oil-less design that provides many benefits to users and designers of equipment.

    Many other high performance pump options use a crankcase of oil to lubricate the drive mechanisms. In order to provide adequate lubrication, the crankcase often needs to be kept parallel to the ground. This requirement limits the equipment design and may compromise overall product goal. Additionally, a crankcase full of oil needs a vent to allow for oil expansion during operation. If an oil containing pump mounted inside equipment is tipped, oil may drain out of the vent and create a mess.

    Pump GreasePumptec pumps do not use oil to lubricate the drive mechanisms. Pumptec uses a special, extreme-duty grease to provide the critical lubrication of the cam bearing and plunger slot. This oil-less design allows the pump to be mounted in a variety of orientations to maximize design possibilities.

    Pumps with oil lubrication require maintenance to change oil. This is often messy and requires complete removal of pump from system to drain and refill. Pumptec pumps typically do not require lubrication maintenance except for humid environments or during replacement part servicing. In the event of grease servicing, the pump head needs to be removed and grease is installed in plunger slot. It is often not necessary to remove plumbing to grease pump.

    It can happen that a severe seal leak occurs in all types of pump. Pumps with oil risk significant damage and cost to expensive drive parts if the oil contamination is not repaired. Pumptec pumps have very few moving and parts and these are simply and inexpensively replaced in such a extreme case.
